Brilliant find. Was this from the Epping Forest. - I recommend people click on the link Kim provided it leads to the PAS record with a great expert description.

A question for Kim , did you find this on your NOX? What mode did you use and what number/audio did you get and how deep?

Cheers Clive

No the one in the link isnt mine but is the only other one to be recorded and that was found in Essex. Mine was on my local permission (in Devon) and is in better condition than the one found in 2013 (in the link). Will get mine recorded when there is an FLO in post.

Was in Field 1. Number was 24/25 and was about 8 inches deep i think.

@kimberleydickinson

What an amazing find Kim - congratulations.

I think the one you linked to in the PAS was found by a guy called Richard Joynson based in Chigwell - he's documented the find on his website:-

There's also a video of him actually digging it up on Youtube at around the 3 minute mark.  Some interesting remarks in the comments section also.  It sounds like he's done quite a bit of research on the artefact and has received confirmation from somebody in Italy that it is of Roman origin.  Might be worth dropping him a line?

Well done again - awesome find.

I am just finding these messages from you Kim with your finds. There is a tapered square section to one side, larger below the figure. I wonder if that went further down to slot onto a rod or pole.  If it is Roman a standard of a section ot soldiers. A bird's head with a snake tail may well be something mythical and Roman? I will try to follow that. A nice find indeed. Nick.

Kim, found it. It is a Cockatrice. A mythical figure on manuscripts and paintings and bird's head and small wings and a snakelike tail.

Nick
